Although UDI has only been incorporated for a short time we are picking up the reins of other non profits that have been dissolved; some of which our board members served on. Our directors have experience, history and success in the Kanungu area. We are hitting the ground running not wanting any of the programs that have been begun to falter. We can't let any of our children miss a year of school.

  • Child Sponsorship Program

Our child sponsorship (Which has primarily been run by our CEO Julie Fanton since 2002) has been spectaculary successful...Our schools even raised the scores on the Primary  Leaving Exam - an intense test that must be passed in order to move on to high school.  The Country was shocked when the Kanungu district placed much higher than urban schools. This is a credit to our primary schools. We are making a difference.

Sponsor a child for a year for $250. Or simply contribute any amount to the child sponsorship program. $250 gives a child school fees, a uniform (often the only decent garment the child owns) and a hot protein meal every day for a year.  We have seen not only educational advancements but also huge improvements over years  in health, hygene and awareness of nutrition with our sponsored kids.

So many of our kids have made it into high school that we intend to expand our program to sponsor children from Great Lakes High School which is supported by Volunteer Uganda in Great Brittan.

  • GREAT LAKES REGIONAL COLLEGE

THE FIRST BUILDING COMPLETED AT G.L.R.C.

Great Lakes Regional College began as a vision of our Ugandan partner, the Hon. Rev. Hamlet Mbabazi. He was the Parliamentary representative to the Kanungu area at the time and having started a strong primary school system saw  the need for a place for the students to move on to. Fund raising began in 2003 (as did classes outdoors) and in 2007 the first graduation ceremony was held. 150 men and women were graduated with either certificate or Bachelor's degree, 97% having already secured employment. The College, which we hope to raise to the University level, has made such a difference in the community. Not only are we sending an educated work force into a previously agrarian culture, we have increased the expectations of the primary school children who now talk about "what I want to study in college".
